- Leave a gift in your Will
By leaving a legacy gift in your Will to Child Bereavement UK, you will be helping to create a future where all families in the UK have access to high-quality bereavement support when a child grieves, or a child dies.
We are delighted to offer our supporters the opportunity to write a simple* Will or amend their existing Will for free through our partnerships with the National Free Wills Network and Farewill. There are two options to write your Will for free of charge:
With a local solicitor
Wherever you live in the UK, you can write your Will with a qualified solicitor in your area. Email [email protected] or call 01242 515 157 with your name and address, and our partner the National Free Will Network will send you a letter with a list of trusted solicitors in your area.
Online
Our Will-writing partners Farewill can support you through writing your Will online or via the telephone (if you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland). You can get started at farewill.com/childbereavementuk.
We know that when you are making your Will your loved ones will come first. But we hope, once you have taken care of your family and friends, that you will consider including a gift in your Will to Child Bereavement UK.
In 2023/2024 gifts left in Wills funded our entire service for 5 months. A gift of any amount will have a big impact.
*Child Bereavement UK will pay a discounted rate for a simple individual or simple mirror Will. If you require anything more than this, you may need to pay for additional work. Speak to your chosen Will provider for more information.Your legacy could:
-
enable us to answer calls to our Helpline, such as from a father who is unsure as to how to tell his six-year-old daughter that her mother is dying, or from a headteacher concerned about how to support a pupil whose brother has just died.
-
provide couples with bereavement support sessions after their child has died.
-
help us to train professionals such as police officers and paramedics to offer sensitive and appropriate support after a sudden death.
If you have any questions about writing your Will through our partners, writing your Will and using your own solicitor, or about leaving a gift to Child Bereavement UK then please email [email protected] or call 01242 515 157.

Yes. Both Farewill and the National Free Wills Network offer couple's Wills; two, completely separate Wills, which give you the freedom to mirror your wishes where you like and you’ll be able to keep some differences too.
Making a Will is the only way you can be sure your wishes will be followed after you die. If you do not have a Will, it can cause additional complications and distress for your family and friends at an already difficult time.
It is good to review it from time to time to make sure it’s still current, especially if there have been any births, deaths, marriages or divorces in your family.
A solicitor from the National Free Wills Network will be able to make any amends to an existing will and add in a gift to your chosen charity.
Child Bereavement UK will pay a discounted rate for a simple individual or mirror Will. If you require anything more than this, for example you have multiple properties or a complicated family, you may need to pay for additional work. Speak to your chosen Will provider for more information.
Your Will provider will need the following information:
- Registered Charity Number in England and Wales: 1061359 and Scotland: SCO41140
- Registered address: Child Bereavement UK, Conway House, 31-33 Worcester Street, Gloucester GL1 3AJ
Your provider will also discuss with you what type of legacy you wish to leave to charity.
- A specific gift is a possession or item such as jewellery, property or shares.
- A pecuniary gift is a financial donation of a fixed amount. However, because of inflation, these are liable to depreciate during the course of your lifetime. That’s why some people may prefer to leave a residuary gift.
- A residuary gift is all or part of what is left of your estate once your other wishes have been carried out.
We would kindly ask that you please consider an unrestricted gift towards our charitable work. This will mean that we can make sure your legacy is used most effectively, spending it wherever the need is greatest at the time. However, if there is a specific area of our work you would like your gift to support, please contact us and we’ll be happy to discuss it with you.
In most cases, your gift to Child Bereavement UK will be exempt from inheritance tax. Your Will provider will explain how to make your Will as tax efficient as possible. They can also outline the rules that reduce the rate of inheritance tax for people who leave at least 10% of their estate to charity.
You do not have to tell us anything. If you use one of our Will providers, Farewill or the National Free Wills Network and choose to leave a gift to Child Bereavement UK, we will be notified.
If you use your own solicitor and choose to leave a gift to Child Bereavement UK, we’d love to hear from you, you can email [email protected].
If you are also willing to tell us what has motivated you to support our work in this way, your story could be a real inspiration to others.
We’re always grateful to anyone who chooses to leave a gift in their Will, but it’s entirely your choice.
If you do choose to leave a gift to Child Bereavement UK you will be providing support to families to rebuild their lives when a child grieves, or when a child dies.
